The major function of a cyclone is to reduce the amount of dust that reaches a high efficiency collection system, such a wet scrubber, baghouse or electrostatic precipitator. By re-directing the air flow, particles are forced to impact the structure, causing the heavier particles to drop out of the air stream and exit though the bottom. While cyclones can reduce the amount of dust by as much as 50 percent, the remaining dust is a much finer material due to removal of the heavier materials.
Cyclones are available in carbon steel and stainless steel and are widely used in food, chemical, cement, mining and steel industries.
